Electrolysis for Grey, White, Blonde and Red Hair

Laser hair removal relies on pigment in the hair to absorb the laser's energy. Because lighter hairs contain little or no dark pigment, they can be difficult or impossible for laser to effectively target.

Electrolysis is different.

Electrolysis does not rely on the colour of the hair, which means it can permanently remove grey, white, blonde, red and dark hair.

Why Hair Colour Matters for Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal works by targeting pigment, or melanin, in the hair. Darker, more heavily pigmented hairs generally provide a clearer target for the laser.

Grey and white hairs have little to no pigment, while blonde and red hairs may not contain enough of the type of pigment needed for effective laser treatment.

This is why someone may have excellent results with laser on their darker hairs but still be left with lighter hairs in the same area.

It is also common for people to notice more grey or white facial hairs as they get older and wonder what their options are once laser can no longer effectively target them.

How Electrolysis Is Different

Electrolysis does not need to "see" the colour of the hair.

During an electrolysis treatment, a very fine sterile filament is inserted into the natural opening of the hair follicle. A small amount of electrical energy is then applied to treat the source of nourishment responsible for hair growth.

When the follicle is treated effectively and that source of nourishment is rendered inactive, the hair is permanently eliminated.

Because the treatment takes place inside the individual hair follicle, the colour of the hair does not determine whether it can be treated.

That means electrolysis can treat:

• Grey hair

• White hair

• Blonde hair

• Red hair

• Brown hair

• Black hair

• Fine or coarse hairs

Can Electrolysis Remove Grey and White Facial Hair?

Yes.

Grey and white facial hairs are some of the most common hairs we treat with electrolysis.

You may have a few stubborn white hairs on your chin, a mixture of dark and grey hairs, or a larger area of unwanted facial hair that has gradually become lighter over time.

Electrolysis allows us to treat the individual hairs regardless of their colour.

This can also make electrolysis a useful option for remaining hairs after laser hair removal, particularly when the darker hairs have responded to laser but lighter hairs remain.

What About Blonde and Red Hair?

Blonde and red hairs can also be treated with electrolysis.

While some blonde and red hairs contain pigment, their pigment characteristics can make them more challenging for laser hair removal to target effectively.

Electrolysis does not have this same limitation.

If the hair is visible and the follicle can be properly treated, its colour does not prevent us from performing electrolysis.

Do I Need to Let the Hair Grow?

The hair needs to be long enough for us to see it and remove it following treatment, but you do not need to grow it out for weeks.

Between electrolysis appointments, shaving or trimming is okay.

We recommend avoiding tweezing, threading, waxing or sugaring the hairs you would like treated. These methods remove the hair from the follicle, which means there may be no hair available for us to treat at your appointment.

How Many Electrolysis Treatments Will I Need?

Electrolysis is a process rather than a one time treatment.

Hair grows in cycles, and not every follicle will have a visible hair at the same time. New hairs will continue to appear as different follicles move through their growth cycles.

The amount of treatment required varies considerably depending on factors such as:

• The size of the area

• The amount and density of hair

• Previous hair removal methods

• Individual hair growth cycles

• Hormonal influences

• How frequently you attend appointments

Some clients are treating only a handful of unwanted hairs, while others are working toward clearing a much larger area.
