Electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal method recognized by Health Canada and the FDA. While the treatment itself is highly effective, proper aftercare plays an important role in helping your skin heal comfortably and reducing the risk of irritation.
The good news? Most clients experience only mild, temporary redness that settles quickly. Following these simple aftercare tips will help your skin recover and prepare you for your next appointment.
The First 24 Hours
Your skin is most sensitive immediately after treatment, so it's important to treat it gently.
Keep the Area Clean
Keep the treated area clean for the first 24 hours. Warm showers and baths are fine, but avoid hot water, scrubbing, and harsh exfoliants to allow your skin to heal comfortably.
Avoid Touching the Area
Try not to touch, rub, or scratch the treated skin. Your hands can transfer bacteria, increasing the risk of irritation or infection. If you need to touch the area, wash your hands thoroughly first.
Skip Makeup on Facial Treatments
If you've had electrolysis on your face, avoid applying makeup for the first 24 hours. This gives your skin time to recover without clogged pores or unnecessary irritation.
Avoid Direct Sun Exposure
Stay out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds for 24–48 hours after treatment. If you need to be outdoors, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your healing skin.
Helping Your Skin Heal
Some mild redness, tenderness, or slight swelling is completely normal after electrolysis and usually fades within a day or two.
To soothe the skin, you can:
Apply an ice pack as needed to reduce redness or swelling.
Soak larger treated areas in an Epsom salt bath to support healing.
Apply a thin layer of Polysporin®, aloe vera gel, or vitamin E cream for the first 2–3 days if your skin feels irritated or dry.
Always apply products with clean hands.
What to Expect After Larger Treatments
If you've had electrolysis on larger areas such as the underarms, legs, bikini line, or back, you may notice redness or tiny scabs developing 24–48 hours after your appointment.
This is a normal part of the healing process and may last up to one week.
If small scabs form:
Leave them alone.
Do not pick or scratch them.
Keep the area clean.
Continue applying soothing creams if needed.
The scabs will naturally fall away as your skin heals.
Special Care for Underarms
If your underarms were treated, try to avoid deodorant for up to 48 hours if possible. This helps reduce irritation while the follicles heal.
Hair Removal Between Appointments
One of the most common questions we hear is:
"Can I remove hair between treatments?"
Yes—but only by shaving or trimming.
Avoid waxing, tweezing, threading, sugaring, or using an epilator. These methods remove the hair from the root, making it impossible for us to treat those follicles during your next appointment and slowing your overall progress.
Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water before and after your appointment helps keep your skin hydrated and may improve the effectiveness and comfort of your electrolysis treatments.
Hydrated skin often responds better during treatment, making it easier for the electrical current to reach the hair follicle effectively.
Donating Blood After Electrolysis
If you plan to donate blood, let the staff know that your electrolysis treatments are performed using a brand-new, sterile, single-use disposable filament for every client and every treatment. This is standard practice and helps ensure the highest level of infection control.
Your Skin Will Thank You
Electrolysis is a gradual process, and healthy skin heals best. By following these aftercare recommendations, you'll help minimize irritation, support faster healing, and achieve the best possible results from your treatments.
